In February 2008 the NZBA and the LRF jointly held the very successful conference Civil Litigation in Crisis - What Crisis?. That conference generated numerous suggestions for improvement of the civil litigation system.
The seminar Civil Litigation - Beyond the Crisis?, held jointly with the NZBA, LRF and University of Otago Legal Issues Centre focussed on:
- International experience with access to justice issues and the lessons we can learn from overseas reform;
- The preliminary results of a recent survey by Otago University's Legal Issues Centre about New Zealand's civil court system; and
- Changes to New Zealand civil procedure - including the introduction of a fast track, changes to the written briefs regime, proposed discovery reforms being considered by the Rules Committee, and debate about further reform.
A full conference report can be found on the "Conference Papers" page of the Members-Area.
