The New Zealand Bar Association | Ngā Ahorangi Motuhake o te Ture and the Australian Bar Association Advocacy Training Council (ATC) are once again combining in 2018 to present an Appellate Advocacy Intensive workshop. The faculty will represent the profession at its senior levels. All faculty members are experienced trainers and will also include judges from the New Zealand Senior Courts.

This course will span a two day period and be taught in Brisbane. It will suit members who have more than ten years PQE and who have significant litigation experience.

Course Description

The workshop is based on a realistic brief that barristers prepare and then perform in real court settings before appellate judges. Participants are required to fully prepare the matter and file submissions in advance. At least three days preparation is required.

Performances are recorded in-court and then reviewed privately with senior members of the faculty. The judges and Senior Counsel provide suggestions for improvement in a supportive, professional environment.

The focus is to enhance the ability of each barrister to craft comprehensive yet concise written submissions, construct and present persuasive arguments and engage effectively with the bench.

This provides the perfect opportunity to get some genuine feedback and ideas on being a better appellate advocate. The workshop is ideal for barristers who wish to appear regularly in appellate courts. The cross-section of views from experienced judges and Senior Counsel is invaluable.

This is a two day, non-residential workshop.  Click here for more information about the course.
