In the first of a new CPD series, Kate Davenport QC will be talking to Sir Ian Barker.  The former High Court Judge and well known arbitrator will talk about his career, the qualities that advocates need, and changes in the justice system over the years. He will share his experience from his remarkable career.

Sir Ian spent 60 years in the law; his first 20 years as an advocate, the next 20 years on the High Court Bench and the last 20 as an arbitrator. It was a career that he enjoyed and he remains grateful for the time he spent as lawyer, judge and arbitrator, and the opportunities afforded to him, including serving as Vice-Chancellor at his alma mater, Auckland University and teaching at Cambridge.  At the time he graduated from law school in 1958, there was one woman in his graduating class. However, change was around the corner and it happened very quickly. He practised through the fast moving 1960’s and witnessed the growth of women in the profession. Only 15 years after graduation, he was appointed QC.  Sir Ian is known for his decisions in highly complex commercial litigation, such as the 10 year long Securitibank Case (Re Securitibank Ltd (No 2) [1978] 2 NZLR 136).
