Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment

New Zealand reports to the United Nations’ Committee Against Torture periodically on measures taken to implement the “Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment” domestically.
In May 2017 the Committee released a “List of Issues” which New Zealand will reply to in its next report due in May 2019. The List of Issues covers a broad range of topics, including detention in prisons and Police facilities, young people in detention, mental health issues and violence against women.

The List of Issues is available to view here.

The Ministry of Justice is holding public consultations on the List of Issues and would like to invite members of the NZBA to attend.
There are four sessions:

  • Wellington – Monday 27th August from 12.30-2.00pm @ Victoria University, Piptea Campus, 27 Lambton Quay, Pipitea, Wellington 6011.
  • Christchurch – Wednesday 29th August 2018 from 12.30-2.00pm @ The Atrium in the Park, 455 Hagley Avenue, Christchurch 8011.
