Rt. Hon. Sir Duncan McMullin PC (1927 – 2017)

The Council and President of the New Zealand Bar Association | Ngā Ahorangi Motuhake o te Ture note with regret the passing of the Rt. Hon. Sir Duncan McMullin PC on 26 June 2017 at the age of 90 years. His funeral will be held at 2pm on Friday 30th June at St Aidan's Anglican Church, corner of Ascot Ave and Remuera Rd, Remuera followed by a private cremation.

Sir Duncan was a judge of the Court of Appeal of New Zealand, Court of Appeal of Fiji and Cook Islands Court of Appeal. In other roles, he chaired the Royal Commission on Contraception, Sterilisation and Abortion (1975–1977), the Wanganui Computer Centre Policy Committee, New Zealand Conservation Authority, the NZEM Market Surveillance Committee, the Judicial Commission of the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand and served on the New Zealand Stock Exchange standing committee.

Sir Duncan was an Auckland Grammar School alumnus and in 2009 was awarded the Augusta Award for service as a distinguished alumnus. He graduated from Auckland University College in 1950 and practised as a barrister and solicitor 1950 – 1965, barrister sole 1965-70, before being appointed the High Court Bench 1970 and subsequently the Court of Appeal 1979. He was appointed a Privy Counsellor in 1980 and was knighted in 1987. He retired in 1989.

Sir Duncan was married to Isobel for 62 years and was father and father-in-law to David and Wendy, Mandy and Dave, Sarah and Stephen and Hamish and Selena, had eight grandchildren and a great grandson.
