The NZBA is delighted to present its latest Criminal Law Update. This one hour webinar looks at recent cases and appellate trends in criminal law. It will discuss recent appellate decisions of general interest to criminal practitioners, including Fahey [2017] NZCA 596  (role of amicus curiae);   Barnes [2018] NZCA 42  (three strikes legislation); Va’afuti [2017] NZSC 141 (s 49 of the Evidence Act); and Christian [2017] NZSC 165 (consent); as well as a recent High Court decision on costs under the Criminal Procedure Act (R v Bublitz [2018] NZHC 373).  There will also be discussion about general trends in appellate cases.

Presenter, Charlotte Brook, is Crown Counsel at the Crown Law Office, where she is the Team Manager for one of the criminal teams. Charlotte has been conducting appeals on behalf of the Crown since joining Crown Law in 2010. Prior to that she worked as a Crown Prosecutor in both Palmerston North and Wellington.

Co-Presenter, Annabel Markham, was admitted in 1995. She is a Senior Crown Counsel at the Crown Law Office, where she has conducted appeals on behalf of the Crown for the past 16 years, at trial and appellate level in criminal and public law cases, including having appeared as counsel in the Supreme Court and Privy Council. Annabel has also contributed a chapter on animal cruelty sentencing to the text Animal Law in Australasia (Federation Press, 2nd ed, 2013).

Webinar Chair, Yelena Yelavich, is a Senior Crown Prosecutor at Kayes Fletcher Walker and has prosecuted numerous trials in the District Court and High Court. Prior to joining Kayes Fletcher Walker, she was an Associate at Meredith Connell.

Cancellation-Refund Policy: If a participant is unable to attend the seminar, a substitute participant is welcome to attend at no additional cost. If you cannot find a substitute or attend the live webinar yourself,  a recording together with CPD material can be made available to you shortly afterwards. A refund less a service fee of $25.00 will apply to all cancellations (received in writing) before midday Friday 6 April 2018. There will be no refunds for cancellations received after that time. The NZBA reserves the right to cancel or reschedule seminars if necessary.
