About Me
Jacob read law at Victoria University, before clerking for Justices Hammond and White of the Court of Appeal and becoming a legal and policy advisor at the Law Commission in Wellington. He moved to the UK for studies at Cambridge and was called to the English Bar, the Australian Bar, the Irish Bar (and EU), and the NZ Bar. A door tenant at 1 Essex Court in London and a research associate at the University of Cambridge Centre for Business Research, he practices internationally across three areas.
Firstly, as a specialist barrister, focusing on contentious commercial and chancery matters. Jacob acts for clients across the wide spectrum of trusts and estates disputes, commercial and equitable remedies, complex regulatory matters, banking law, trustee duties, tracing and freezing, and constructive trusts. He was a special officer of the National Crime Agency working on civil forfeiture and proceeds of crime and practiced in the Channel Islands and offshore. He is the only member of the NZ or Australian Bar also practising at the Irish Bar and has advised the Irish Government on high value matters and choice of law clauses. Jacob is a Chartered Banker, and a member of the Chancery Bar Association.
Secondly, as an FCIArb Arbitrator and CMC registered civil and commercial mediator, Jacob resolves high value civil and commercial disputes, in New Zealand, and internationally.
Thirdly, he has a niche practice focusing on disability discrimination, EDI, high value employment disputes, and education policy. He has advised universities, government departments, and FTSE100 businesses on their HR and employment practices, and is a panel member for the UK Ministry of Justice as a senior HR leader advising on government appointments and the Nolan principles.
Jacob accepts New Zealand instructions, and provides expert opinions or advice. He can be contacted at director@meagherconsultancy.com or at clerks@1ec.co.uk
