Colin’s background is as a litigation partner for many years in a major firm. He commenced practice at the independent Bar in 1987 and was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1990.
He has had extensive experience in commercial litigation, particularly in cases concerning directors’ responsibilities. He has also had significant experience in criminal work, including Serious Fraud Office prosecutions, tax prosecutions, securities prosecutions and other regulatory prosecutions.
In 2019 he was appointed Chief Commissioner of the newly formed Criminal Cases Review Commission. He chairs the Commission and leads the implementation of the Criminal Cases Review Commission Act 2019. He led the development of key operational policies, such as the investigative process and how applications are to be made and handled by the Commission. He leads engagement with key stakeholders from political, judicial and other spheres, including victims’ rights organisations, and is responsible for the relationship with the CCRC’s monitoring agency, the Ministry of Justice.
Colin was president of the NZBA from 2008-2010.
