Earlier this year, at a Special General Meeting of the Association, members voted to adopt the name gifted to us by the New Zealand Māori Council. The Association is now known as the New Zealand Bar Association | Ngā Ahorangi Motuhake o te Ture. We acknowledge and thank Sir Edward Taihākurei Durie KNZM (Rangitāne, Ngāti Kauwhata and Ngāti Raukawa, Pou of the Māori Council) and Dr Ken Kennedy (Te Ārawa, Ngāti Rangiteaorere, and Ngāti Wāhiao) for their consideration of an appropriate name. They suggested the name Ngā Ahorangi Motuhake o te Ture as it carries with it the idea of independent specialists (ahorangi motuhake) whose advice and assistance are sought by the other lawyers. It suggests expertise.

The Council invites Association members to join our guests in celebrating our name at a drinks and nibbles function. The event will be held at the National Library, which has kindly agreed to keep the Document Room open. This room houses he Tohu, which is a permanent exhibition of three iconic documents:

  • He Whakaputanga o te Rangatiratanga o Nu Tireni – the Declaration of Independence of the United Tribes of New Zealand
  • Te Tiriti o Waitangi — the Treaty of Waitangi
  • Women’s Suffrage Petition

As well as meeting our invited guests, including members of the New Zealand Māori Council, the judiciary and those involved in the law, our full Council will be meeting in Wellington and joining the celebration after the meeting. They look forward to meeting members.

Please note:  This event is free for members but numbers are limited. You will need to register in order to attend (unless you have sent an RSVP to an invitation).
