About Me
I have practised in the fields of civil litigation and public law for 18 years and have been a barrister sole since 2015. Coming from both private and public sector backgrounds, I have acted for a wide array of clients across a diverse range of issues. I have substantive court experience in the superior courts, including appearances in the Supreme Court, as lead counsel. I have taught advocacy modules for the Institute of Professional Legal Studies for graduates seeking admission to the bar. I am also a District Inspector for Mental Health, having been appointed under s94 of the Mental Health (Compulsory Assessment and Treatment) Act 1992 for a three-year term to June 2023. As a District Inspector I advise patients compulsorily detained of their legal rights and independently monitor and investigate complaints over breaches of patient rights.
In 2020, Isabella Clarke and I established Kate Sheppard Chambers, New Zealand's first fully virtual chambers structured to support and promote women barristers. Please see our website www.katesheppardchambers.co.nz for more information.
