Abuse in Care Inquiry Redress Hearing - release of Issues Paper and Scoping Paper

The Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care will hold a number of public hearings over the next three years on various topics and themes as directed by the Inquiry’s Terms of Reference.

There will be a public hearing on Redress (Civil Claims) in March 2020. The purpose of the hearing is to examine civil claims and civil litigation relating to abuse in State care and the Crown’s responses to, and resolution of, such claims. The hearing is open to the public and will be live-streamed via the Commission’s website.

The consultation process on the issues paper closes on Thursday 12 December 2019. This gives sufficient time to still be able to participate in the submissions process once legal assistance becomes available (see below). Survivors will also be able to seek legal advice about participating in the redress public hearing in March 2020.

The scoping paper for this hearing has been released and is attached below. It is also available on the Abuse in Care Inquiry website under Current Investigations on the Public hearings. The Research Team have concurrently released an issues paper for this topic (attached below and also available on the Commission's website under Current Investigations).

Survivors and other stakeholders will find information about the availability of legal assistance on the Commission's website. It is expected that funding will be approved in mid-October, at which time a practice note about eligibility and how to apply will be issued.

There are many different ways for survivors to be involved in this Inquiry, including private sessions with Commissioners, round table meetings, providing submissions, attending a community hui (dates TBC), or by attending or watching the public hearings. Find out more here.

If you have any queries please email the Commission or call its Contact and Support Team on 0800 222 727 (10 am – 4 pm weekdays).
