We are delighted to announce Geoff’s availability for this webinar, as he is frequently working overseas. We strongly encourage you to attend and hear his perspectives on the most effective mediation techniques and learn from his extensive experience as an international mediator.

Rachel Burt will be interviewing Geoff Sharp. They will discuss the untapped potential of mediation and how barristers might extend and adapt their skills for the forum.

Some of the issues that will be discussed include:

Barrister as client representative

  • the key strengths a skilled advocate has when representing a client at mediation
  • the advocates who damage their client’s case
  • the best way to work with a mediator as an advocate
  • experiences with international mediations – different styles and approaches

  • what we should forget about legal training when we act as mediator
  • the fundamental lessons Geoff has learnt as a mediator
  • the differences between mediations across different specialities

Our Presenters

 

Geoff Sharp

Geoff is a mediator focusing on commercial disputes in NZ, Asia and Europe. He has a domestic practice from Clifton Chambers in Wellington and is also a member of Maxwell Mediators, Singapore and Brick Court Chambers, London.  

He holds senior posts in the mediation community including the United Nations International Advisory Board with oversight of the UN’s Global Mediation Panel and he is an Ambassador for the Singapore International Mediation Centre and a Distinguished Fellow of the International Academy of Mediators, a grouping of the world’s most recognised commercial mediators.

Previously Geoff was litigation partner at Bell Gully and began his career with King & Wood Mallesons.

 

Rachel Burt 

Rachel Burt is an employment and human rights barrister who has over 20 years specialist experience, including ten years at Dentons Kensington Swan, as senior counsel.

Rachel is a qualified mediator and restorative practice proponent, who frequently conducts mediations for Sports and Recreation and facilitates issues within workplace teams to resolve disputes. She also provides advocacy and advice on behalf of clients throughout New Zealand regarding all matters related to employment law and professional conduct.
